With most of the major conferences beginning their tournaments today, the selection committee has a lot to determine come Selection Sunday. However several mid-major conferences have already crowned their league champion and sent in their automatic bid. Several of this year's automatic bid teams have not only appeared on the March Madness stage, but also thrived on it. Let's take a look back on some of their best memories in recent years.
VCU Beats Duke, 2007 Opening Round
Eric Maynor made himself quite a sensation by singlehandedly beating Duke in the first round of this tournament. Not only did Maynor knock down the big shots, he disrupted the Blue Devils perimeter offense all night. Maynor's big-time player attitude most likely helped him to be selected 20th overall by the OKC Thunder in 2009.
Murray State Beats Vanderbilt, 2010 Opening Round
Murray State is 30-1 this year, so I'm not sure they will be any type of cinderella if they go on a run. But two years ago they were a 13 seed playing the 4 seed Commodores and a classic pull up buzzer beater helped seal the deal for them.
Davidson 2008, Elite Eight Run
Do I even have to help you recall Steph Curry carrying the entire Davidson team, school and campus to an Elite Eight appearance? I think not.
Western Kentucky Beats Drake 2008 Opening Round
I understand this is a little bit like a mid-major beating a mid-major, but Drake was a #5 seed and WKU was a #12 seed. Either way this buzzer beater is about as absurd as they come. Enjoy the madness.
