Tony Romo might be a choke artist, but the Cowboys don't have great options to replace him this offseason. |
In today's world we are so prone to overreactions because of the ease with which we get sports analysis. Everyone's got something to say about everything (including myself) and we can access everyone's opinion so quickly and so easily that it's not difficult to overreact to your team every single day. Here we'll try to soften overreactions to each NFL team by giving a more level-headed analysis.
NFC East:
Washington Redskins, 10-6
Overreaction: "RGIII's injury is only the beginning of the end, we'll see him shred his knee even more further down the road. Guess we gotta hope Kirk Cousins is the real deal!"
Truth: While the RGIII injury can't really be looked at as a positive, I will say that it should change the way the Redskins use Griffin and that will only be a good thing. These read-option offenses are a fad and won't be around five years from now especially if we see guys like Russ Wilson and Kaepernick go down with similar injuries as RGIII. The best part for Washington is that Griffin actually has the passing skills and the ability to read defenses required to be a pocket passer. That's the way Griffin should play both because I think he'll thrive there and because of insurance purposes. Don't worry though, there's a good core here for the Redskins future.
New York Giants, 9-7
Overreaction: "Our secondary is terrible, our linebackers are terrible, our defensive line is overrated, we can't run the ball. This team won't win more than six games next year."
Truth: While the issues on defense are real, they're certainly fixable via the draft and free agency. Internally if Terrell Thomas comes back healthy from his torn ACL that should immediately bolster their secondary which was 28th in passing defense. On the D-line, we all know how good JPP is, but I think they should go out and draft a DE in the 1st round instead of trying to re-sign Osi Umenyiora. The linebackers issue is probably the hardest to solve, but as for the running game, that's a bit of an overstatement. The Giants were 12th in passing and 14th in rushing, seems like balance to me. We'll see how they solve the Cruz/Nicks free agent situation, but I'll say Eli Mannin will be better than he was.
Dallas Cowboys, 8-8
Overreaction: "Tony Romo needs to go, he can't get it done in the big time. It's not in his genes to lead us to the promise land."
Truth: Yes, Romo hasn't proven he can do it in the clutch, but that's still a ridiculous proposal. Tony Romo is a great passer and that's undeniable. He doesn't always make the greatest decisions, but it also doesn't help when you're dead last in rushing. I think that DeMarco Murray could change that if he can remain healthy next year. Either way, how are you going to replace Romo with the terrible quarterback class in this year's draft? Are you going to bring in Alex Smith? I'd still rather have Romo.
Philadelphia Eagles, 4-12
Overreaction: "Chip Kelly is going to turn the Eagles offense into an absolute powerhouse."
Truth: While Kelly is an offensive genius, I've got this feeling the Eagles are going to make a mistake and draft Geno Smith with their first round pick. Yes, he on paper, fits Kelly's athletic throwing QB role, but I don't think hes' that good. His stats were impressive, but he didn't really make his Mountaineers that much better. The better decision for the Eagles is to draft some more help on the line and to hope that Andrew Peters can come back healthy as well as Nick Foles turning into a solid quarterback. Kelly will need an athletic O-line to keep up with his quick-hitting offensive philosophy.
