Should the Jets trade Revis? Absolutely not. (Credits: Robert Sabo/ New York Daily News) |
In today's world we are so prone to overreactions because of the ease with which we get sports analysis. Everyone's got something to say about everything (including myself) and we can access everyone's opinion so quickly and so easily that it's not difficult to overreact to your team every single day. Here we'll try to soften overreactions to each NFL team by giving a more level-headed analysis.
AFC East:
New England, 12-4
Overreaction: "This team just doesn't have it anymore, Belichick's lost it, Brady's aging, Welker's going to be gone. The glory years in New England are over."
Truth: While many Patriots fans are delusional and can't fathom going nine years without winning a Super Bowl, this team will be right there again next year. Brady might be aging, but he's still one of the Top-5 quarterbacks in the league and a majority of the time he's the best in the league. I completely disagree with the idea that Belichick has lost it; it's not his fault the players didn't perform in the AFC Championship Game. Yes, I do believe the Patriots will let Welker walk, but they'll re-tool like they always do. Belichick is the best at making something out of nothing and I think this team has one Super Bowl left in it before Brady's time is up.
Miami, 7-9
Overreaction: "We've got a future with Tannehill and a solid young defense, we've got the best shot to dethrone the Patriots in the AFC East."
Truth: Tannehill is an average quarterback at best. If the Dolphins want to maximize the 24-year-old's talent they need to get more weapons in the draft; fortunately for Miami they don't have to worry about their offensive line. Kiper has them taking playmaking wideout Cordarelle Patterson out of Tennessee in his lastest mock draft, and I agree with the pick. I do like some of the pieces Miami has on defense like Cameron Wake, Karlos Dansby and Chris Clemons, but still more is needed on that end to dethrone the Pats. There's no way they can win the AFC East when their pass defense ranked 27th last year.
Buffalo Bills, 6-10
Overreaction: "Doug Marrone? Who the f**k is that? Why didn't we get Lovie Smith or someone with experience other than a .500 record at SYRACUSE?"
Truth: Two things should make you excited about Marrone. One, he's a quarterback-making genius. He took a two-star recruit in Ryan Nassib and turned him into the fifth-ranked QB in this year's NFL draft. You can "Syracuse sucks" this and "Syracuse sucks" that but I don't recall many two-star recruits that went to the show in the 2nd round. Secondly, Marrone is a break from the norm. The Bills have hired so many retreads since Wade Phillips that it should make you want to puke. Marrone's fresh with an exciting offensive philosophy. As long as Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn't head the depth chart, the Bills could very well be a playoff contender next year. But then again, they are the Bills...
New York Jets, 6-10
Overreaction: "We've got to trade Darrelle Revis and get a great deal when his value is still high!"
Truth: Absolutely not. If Adrian Peterson showed us something this year it's that Revis can totally re-discover his pre-injury form. Revis is the ultimate shutdown corner in the league and if he stays on the trend he was on, he'll probably go down as the greatest cornerback of all-time. Do you really want to be the team that traded him for Alex Smith and a 2nd round pick? No way. With the way Cromartie stepped up this season, the Jets easily could have the best cornerback duo in the league next year. At one time I agreed with the trade, but the prospects of giving up the best d-back in the NFL for a what-if scenario became nauseating.
