Rondo's signature ball-fake move is among the game's deadliest. |
If the Boston Celtics are going to step on Miami's throat tonight it's honestly up to one man, Rajon Rondo. The much criticized but viciously talented Rondo can be the Celtics biggest asset or worst nightmare. If he shows up, forget about it, dude's a mastermind. If he doesn't then the Celtics are treading mud.
But the point of this post is not to obsess over Rondo's ability to dominate for an entire 48 minutes, it's more to praise his most deadly move. It's actually probably the deadliest move in all of the NBA. Of course I'm talking about his ball fake move in which he pulls the ball behind him as if he's going to dish it only to swing his long arm around and lay the ball into the hoop. He comes about as close as possible to traveling and straight embarrasses his helpless opponent. If you're a Celtics fan you know exactly what I'm talking about. If you're not you surely have seen your team get straight worked by this wild move. Sometimes he uses it to fake out big man under the basket only to turn around for an easy layup. Other time he uses it to fake out an entire defense as he cuts to the hole. Either way it's simply vicious. His ability to stop on a dime after flying to the hole is simply magnificent, but the body control to pull this move off is mind-blowing.
Is this move as deadly as Tim Hardaway's cross over, Kobe's fadeaway or Jamal Crawford's shake-n-bake? Yeah, probably deadlier. Rondo is growing as a scorer finally, but this move has been his go-to attack-the-basket move and it has been with him since day one. Now it just takes his game to that next level.
Rondo will make the crowd jump with one of these and if he's on, forget about it Miami.
