This trophy would mean a lot more if there wasn't fan voting. |
With that being said, the NBA hurts it's even more successful All-Star weekend by allowing for fans to vote for the starters. Fan voting is absolute debauchery. 90% of NBA fans that vote for All-Stars have absolutely no idea who is good in a given season or not. Half the time it's a full selection of household names, which is seriously unfair to those that deserve it. The NBA has tried to combat some of that superstar blindness by allowing the coaches to pick the reserves. But the problem with the coaches is that they, like fans, don't always see what's going on with the rest of the league. They will obviously have a better opinion than the casual fan, but they're not exactly zoned in on the other teams in the NBA. Their job is to coach their squad, and so they only focus on match ups from night-to-night.
The most serious negative outcome resulting from fan and coach voting is that the "10-time NBA All-Star" is an erroneous accomplishment. Just because you're Kobe Bryant doesn't mean you always deserve to be an All-Star. Kobe is human, despite his numerous attempts(cough, cough, 81 points) to prove to us he's not. Kobe can have a bad year. But take this year for example, where Dirk Nowitzki is having his worst statistical season since 2000 and yet he's still going to be in Orlando in a couple of weeks. Dirk is an elite NBA player, but he has not made the sort of statistical impact that Pao Gasol has had in L.A. I'm sorry but just because you carried your squad to an NBA Championship last year doesn't mean you are an automatic All-Star. The league simply needs to cut the BS and set some standards.
Can we please just get a committee of individuals that oversee the voting process and sure up any red-flags. All we need is a group of writers, sort of like the AP poll to vote for the NBA All-Stars. I guarantee the NBA will lose no revenue or fan interest with this minor, yet vital, tweak. If you don't think the NBA All-Star game is successful simply as an event, you're out of your mind. That weekend, especially when it's in a vibrant city, is amazing. People pay serious money to enjoy this 3 day event and I'm pretty sure no one would give a you-know-what if they cut out fan voting. Anways, the rosters wouldn't look all that different if a committee voted for them. However it would completely raise the respect level associated with being an all-star. Our 10 time all-stars would actually be true 10 time all-stars. I mean why not improve the best all-star game by making it a game of the best 12 players in each conference in that particular season.
I don't in any way, shape or form think fan voting does anything for the NBA's PR. Stand up for yourself David Stern and veto fan voting, it would do wonders for the popularity of the league. Or maybe it'll just gain the respect of us few who spit on the phrase "fan voting." Every time I hear those group of words I want to hit the person next to me, but I hold back out of the ridiculousness of that action. Either way the NBA needs to stop acting like a insecure little girl and hold onto the little manhood it has remaining. Leave it to the experts. Please.
