How Dramatic Of An Effect Will Nike Have On NFL Jerseys
Posted on 10:01 AM by Unknown
Back in December, Bleacher Report released "prototypes" for what the NFL Nike Jerseys for 2012 could look like. Some of them were out-of-this-world wild, but some looked exceptionally cool. We've found out that college football has had really no filter on how ridiculous their Nike jerseys can get. But will the NFL let itself fall to the sometimes overzealous Nike? Or will it stand up to the Nike empire?
I have always been an avid Nike fan. Their products are state-of-the-art, comfortable and look damn good. Yet, we all know that they can get a little ridiculous at times. The NFL has been an league mostly void of horrendous jerseys(though they haven't totally escaped it). Their jerseys have stayed mostly classy over the years, especially for some organizations like the Raiders, Giants and Colts. My question will Nike try to override these classy franchises or will they attempt to flex their muscle and turn the NFL into a big Nike party?
Thinking about organizations like the Bengals, Seahawks and Jaguars, I'm imaging them jumping all over the ridiculous jerseys that Nike could materialize. But I can't see the Mara family letting Nike turn the Giants simple jerseys into some wild blue and red combo like they have over at Oregon. I think Oregon's color scheme, black, green and neon yellow work with the sleek Nike design. I'm not sure turning the classic blue and red colors into some wild neon bright combination is the way the Giants or many NFL teams will want to represent themselves on the field. Though I thoroughly enjoy this "American" Patriots jersey, it's just unrealistic especially with Bob Kraft running the organization.
Nike has one simple objective, add to the league's swagger. They don't need to go out and completely revolutionize NFL uniforms, but I think they're going to try. Instead they simply need to flex their muscle at their far inferior competitor Reebok and show them that this is a Nike world, and we're all living in it. The most exciting part of Nike taking over as the NFL manufacturer will be the excess gear. The cleats will get sicker, the sideline gear will be amazing and the fan wear will be unbelievable.
I don't think Nike will have a problem forcing their wild "pro combat" line on some of the lesser organizations, but the big boys will certainly put up a fight. So Nike, take the manufacturing of NFL jerseys as a privilege, not a right. There's a fine line between swagger and shocking, you got it right with Oregon, let's get it right again.
