Derrick Rose's high-flyer status hasn't done much to help him in the eyes of NBA analysts. |
Derrick Rose is probably one of the most heavily debated players in the NBA. Is he the best point guard in the league? Can he lead a team? Does he have the ability to truly run an offense? These are some of the questions that analysts barrage each other with concerning Rose. But how does Rose feel about it? That's probably a question the quiet Bulls point guard will never answer for us.
For a basketball player so gifted offensively and defensively, Rose doesn't get enough love. His driving ability is absolutely unparalleled especially if you consider the fact that he's 5 inches shorter and sixty pounds lighter than the freight train that is Lebron James. The former Memphis guard wows us almost every time he heads into the lane, and when he goes up, the ball is most certainly going in the hoop. On the defensive end Rose holds his own thanks to his supreme athleticism. D-Rose's most famous flaw, however, is his ugly shot. That's really it. Derrick Rose cannot shoot. However, critics continue to throw Derrick Rose by the wayside especially when he's compared to Chris Paul or Deron Williams. What I really mean by "thrown by the wayside" is that the disparity between the #1 and #2 PGs in the league(CP3 and D-Will) and D-Rose is gigantic. Some would even have the audacity to put Rajon Rondo above him, despite Rondo's inability to put the ball in the basketball.
I feel bad for Derrick Rose. The guy goes out and wins an MVP last year, carries his team all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals and then is told that he didn't deserve the award, but that Lebron James did. To say that ANY of the Big Three in Miami deserve an Most Valuable Player award is absolutely ridiculous, especially if the guy would be Lebron James. That's the same man who forgets all his playing abilities come the fourth quarter. But anyways, Derrick Rose was last year's MVP and he completely deserved it. Could you name any player on the Bulls who had a worth greater than Rose? Not even close. What place did the Bulls finish in last year? 1st. That formula equals the Most Valuable Player. Yet even with his most recent addition to the trophy room, Rose is still not placed among the most elite players in the league. Maybe because he's not a pure passer. Maybe because he's an average shooter. Maybe because he came into the league later than D-Will and CP3 and he hasn't "earned" it yet. But Rose is there. He might be the third best point guard in the league, but by the slimmest of margins. His scoring ability is far superior to the rest of the point guards in the league. If Rose didn't have the presence of mind to actually play like a floor general, I could see him scoring around 28 points a game. Yet he recognizes his duty and he has continued to strive toward being the best point guard in the league, though CP3 and D-Will have assumed that role by default.
D-Rose will continue to improve, but he'll also continue to ride the coattails(undeservingly) of Paul, Williams and every other scoring superstar in the league. He might not be the perfect image of a point guard, but his attitude and perseverance should one day get him to the NBA's championship plateau. That is, unless, Carlos Boozer continues to lead a underachievement campaign for the rest off is tenure, then Derrick Rose might have problems.
