Eli Manning was zoned in all night, winning Super Bowl MVP in convincing fashion. |
When I decided not to post a Super Bowl preview it was for a few reasons. A, I honestly had no idea who was going to win this game and B, I think enough of you were reading ESPN's predictions and didn't need another opinion to cloud your thoughts. But there were of course a few story lines that rose out of the ashes of yesterday's Giants victory.
Eli Manning Has Silenced ALL Of The Doubters
Manning now has matched Phil Simms with two Super Bowl rings, two Super Bowl MVPs and has beaten the almighty Tom Brady in both attempts in the big game. If you don't think Eli is among the top 5 QBs in the league, then you've lost your mind. This time around the Giants won the Super Bowl because of Manning rather than in spite of him. He, not the defense or running game, was the main reason why the Giants were even contenders let alone Super Bowl Champs. Eli's has matured from a pure passer into a leader. In the beginning of that game last night, Manning was completely zoned in. That scared, confused, little boy look was non existent yesterday, and hasn't come out since somewhere in the middle of the season. One more Super Bowl and I think it's fair to bring Eli, not Peyton, into the argument of greatest QBs of all-time. Man, that sounds weird, but it's true.
Bill Belichick Is The Best Coach In The NFL
Mid-way through last night game I realized something. The Patriots aren't that good. Their players, excluding Brady, Welker and Gronkowski, simply aren't that talented. It has long been said that Bill Belichick is the best coach in the NFL, however this season more than any other, has proved that to be 100% true. It's astonishing to think that a team with it's full team talent on par with the Buffalo Bills, could go 13-3 in the regular season and make the Super Bowl. The hoodie has more tricks up his sleeve than David Blaine and his system is about as flawless as Brady's wife. His ability to push average players to their highest skill threshold is mind-numbing, as dramatic as that sounds. The next time you see Patrick Chung or Matt Light on the street let them know that they wouldn't be good if it wasn't for Mr. Belichick.
It's Not About Being Good, It's About Being Hot
Even though the Giants were the better team in the Super Bowl, they would have won regardless. They got it together at the right time(Week 15) and took off. We've seen plenty of teams(including last years Packers) start the season out poorly only to catch fire at the end of the year, and burn right through the playoffs. Everything needs to be clicking on every cylinder in order for a team to win a Super Bowl, so what better time then the end of the year?
This Super Bowl Means More To The Giants Than The Last One
In 2007 the Giants came flying in out of left field when they won it all. This year, New York actually had the confidence of many NFL analysts, and even if they weren't favored in the spread, they were probably favorites. With that being said, the Giants(mostly Tuck, Eli and Tom Coughlin) needed to win this game. They needed to prove to the world that they weren't a flash-in-the-pan kind of ball club like some people thought. Plus, they were talking trash like they worked for Waste Management; they had to walk the walk. In '07 it was about making memories, this year it was about creating a legacy.
Mara's Confidence In Coughlin Has Truly Paid Off
Every year it was "Off with Coughlin's head," and every year John Mara backed up his head coach. 8 years of confidence in the league's oldest coach resulted in two epic Super Bowls and a large flex of the New York muscle in the direction of the New England Patriots. Mara has to be one of, if not the, classiest owner in the NFL, and the same could be said about Coughlin in the ranks of NFL coaches. He never wavered when the New York media and their fans wanted to burn bridges after a couple embarrassing playoff misses. Keeping Coughlin for all this time has been a difficult decision, but it has been worth every struggling minute the team has had.
