We're probably going to have the fortune or misfortune of seeing these two go head-to-head again. |
The buildup was reminiscent of a midseason meeting between Duke and UNC, but bigger. Bama and LSU. The matchup sent chills down the spine of any competent sports fan. The result- a bunch of people asking themselves if they really just watched 4 hours of football to see 5 field goals. Sounds about as exciting as watching a WNBA playoff game. Being par for the course around this time of year, coaches are making pitches for their respective squads to be considered for the National Championship game. So barring some kind of monumental, epic, unbelievable disaster in today’s SEC championship game or some BCS computer meltdown we’re going to see these two teams play…again. I’m here on my virgin voyage to lay out the pro’s and con’s of a rematch between these two SEC powerhouses.
Pro’s-
- They are undoubtedly the two best teams in college football right now.
- Imagine if both teams are on. Alabama missed 4, YES 4, field goals and failed to convert in the red zone twice. I was never known for my mathematics, but that’s somewhere in the neighborhood of a 26 point difference.
- This is a genuine football rivalry dating back nearly 80 years, which is much more exciting to watch than two teams that have never played before and will likely never play again.
- Alabama’s Defense is rated number 1. LSU’s is number 2. Enough said.
- We wouldn’t have to watch glorified TP graduate Shayne Skov all night.
Con’s-
- We already saw this, and it wasn’t that cool.
- Doesn’t give the Stanfords and the Oklahoma States, or someone other than the top of the SEC, a chance to shine on the national stage.
- A majority of the country doesn’t have a team to cheer for.
- LSU’s offense is ranked 52nd in the country… which statistically speaking means that anyone from the Central Michigan Chippewas to the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes could provide us with a more exciting game.
To be honest, as long as Houston or Oklahoma State and their NFL veteran aged QB don’t get selected, the game will be sick. Big hits, Nike Swag, and chiseled freakish athletes running around never fail to impress. In the words of Nick Saban, “The whole thing should be based on the best two teams. Isn’t that what its supposed to be?” Dudes gotta point.
