ESPN.com- FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets are a polarizing team, often cast as the villain because of their bravado. They understand that. What they can't accept -- what really ticks them off -- is when they're treated that way in their own house.
Before the game starts.
Quarterback Mark Sanchez was booed during the pregame introductions last Sunday at MetLife Stadium, shocking and upsetting many of his teammates. Three days later, some of them still were fuming over the lack of fan support for the embattled leader.
"It was just surprising to me," cornerback Darrelle Revis said. "It's disappointing in a way because we feed off our fans."
Tight end Dustin Keller didn't trust his ears, so he asked others if the boos were real.
"I was like, 'Nah, I didn't really hear that,'" Keller said. "It doesn't make sense. It's completely unfair. Obviously, we appreciate our fans cheering for us, but the ones that booed him, it's absolutely not fair."Well this is the softest sports news to come out of New York City since Sean Avery snitched to the world about Wayne Simmonds calling him a "faggot." But Jets Players, are you actually serious? Are you actually complaining about New York fans, let alone New York Jets' fans booing a player on their team? Holy hell if this is problem you've got something coming for you.
Welcome to New York, Revis, Keller and whoever else thinks it's OK to publicly complain about booing. You play in the most pressure packed(within reasonable measure, Philly's still a joke) sports city in the nation, you better be ready for the fans to boo. What makes it even worse is that Sanchez's play before Sunday's game totally warranted the boos. New York expects way too much out of their players, so you better be exceptionally ready for the boo birds to come out when you're tossing INTs like it's going out of style. Sanchez's pretty boy style makes him a major target to criticism when his play is disappointing. But, that's not even the problem.
The problem is the the Jets display this excessive "tough guy" image to the world. So when they come to the media with this whiny, soft "boo bird" jargon, it actually angers me. You're in New York, you get what is expected of you, stop trying to "defend" your quarterback off the field. The Sanchise, though noticeably soft, is a big boy and can handle himself, thank you very much #RevisIsland. I'm sure Rex Ryan was pretty pissed that either player said anything. I'm just still stunned that this is any slight bit of a public issue. Just because you think it's "unfair" Dustin Keller, doesn't mean that New York cares about your whining and is going to stop booing you. Actually, probably, the next time you drop a pass Keller the boo birds will come down hard on you. Go live up to expectations, that's when they'll stop booing you.
Memo to the Jets players:
Either shut your mouths and play ball, or start applying for jobs at Downey and Garmin; this is embarrassingly soft.
