Tebow and the Broncos have had more than their share to celebrate about. |
It's simple, the guy has proven he's a winner so far, but not against the elite opponents in the NFL, barring a sketchy win against the Jets. Every game he has played has been dramatic, except for a 38-24 defeat of the Oakland Raiders. And while winning dramatic fashion does give valuable experience, it is usually was the result Tebow's lack of accuracy and poor decision making that put the Broncos in those places in the first place. I will give him credit though, he's been able to dig himself out of holes left and right. Yeah, maybe he is the Miracle Man. Maybe he is the second coming of Jesus Christ, but he still has a long way to go. Tebow's mechanics are considered by NFL scouts, to be pathetic, and his wild incompletions certainly verify those statements. He has the size and strength to run an option offense, and to run it often. Yet, at some point he's going to get a career shaking hit from one of the elite NFL linebackers and it will make him second guess running the ball. This is the NFL, no running QB in the history of the league has run with power. They've all been finesse guys and last time I checked, Tebow likes to lower his shoulder instead of take a slide.
In all honesty, I think his high school, "Just win whatever way we can" mentality is enjoyable. But at some point the NFL is going to put him in his place. Name me a team that has a QB make a habit out of 3 quarters of inefficiency and win a Super Bowl. Sure there have been some brutally mediocre quarterbacks over the years; Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer are the most recent to win it without slinging it. But Tebow's inconsistency isn't game to game, it's half-to-half. Let's say he falls behind the Patriots this Sunday? Do you actually think he's going to outscore that high-flying playoff-bound New England offense? It's simply unimaginable.
So while Tim Tebow has shown us a knack for the dramatic and the ability to will his team to victory, we haven't seen it on the grand stage yet. If he goes out on Sunday and stands on the cross in the fourth quarter against the Pats, then I will label myself a believer. Just don't ask me to take that religion jargon seriously. Keep your faith to yourself bud, this is the NFL on CBS, not Telecare.
